Priority Standards for Technology, Nov. 30 - Dec. 7

The Hour of Code is here! All Norway students will be participating in coding activities in Technology. Mrs. Speer will also be offering a "Coding with Sphero" session for classrooms to sign up for.

What is Hour of Code?

  • A global movement that brings computer sciences to students during computer science education week.
  • Began as an hour challenge to introduce students to computer sciences and turned into a global learning event.
  • The lifestyle we live today with our tablets, and mobile phones wouldn’t be possible without computer programming. Most people are intimidated by the thought of learning how to program but, as with anything, the more you practice the easier it gets.
Why Coding?
  • Everything computers do is controlled by lines of code, called computer programs, which are written by coders, or programmers.
  • Computer programming is currently one of the world’s fastest growing occupations.
  • There are approx. 587,000 computing jobs nationwide (some of the highest paying jobs in US) but only about 38,000 computer science students graduated into the workforce this year.
What is Code?
  • Code is a set of instructions (or rules) that computers can understand; it might be helpful to think of code as a recipe.
  • People write code, code powers computers and computers power many everyday objects like phones, watches, microwaves and cars. In fact, almost anything powered by electricity uses code.
  • There are many names for people who code: coders, programmers, developers, computer scientists, software engineers, etc.
