5th Grade Digital Scrapbook

***As of May 15, 2018, I have a few students needing to finish and/or share. I will update the links as soon as I am able.***

Women's History Month is in March. In 5th grade we explored a few websites and chose a woman to make a digital scrapbook to teach about. One of the websites we used was My Hero which encourages people of all ages to learn, create and act in responsible ways. Another website we checked out was National Women's History Project, where we learned about the 2018 theme and the women to be honored this year.

The Technology Literacy Skills we focused on in this project:
21.3 -5.TL.3 Utilize digital tools and resources to investigate real–world issues,
answer questions, or solve problems.
*I can follow a plan to find information using digital tools.
21.3-5.TL.4 Use technological resources to develop and refine questions for
investigation.
*I can use information from more than one source.
21.3-5.TL.5 Understand and practice appropriate, legal, and safe uses of
technology for lifelong learning.
*I can use copyrighted materials responsibly.

Battle of the Books 2019

The list is out for the 2019 Battle of the Books
a.k.a. BOTB
date TBA, held in Winterset, Iowa!

What is it?
This is a competition for Grades 5-8. Teams of 4 students compete to answer questions about a list of 20 books. In a match, 2 teams alternate questions. The answer is always the title of the book, with bonus points for the author name(s).

Sample Question (written by one of the Bookworms and used at the competition!):
In which books does the main character keep a Book of Thoughts?
[Answer: Lost in the Sun by Lisa Graff]

Benton Bookworms
A group of 6 students and Mrs. Speer went to the BOTB tournament for the first time in April 2018. We had lots of fun and saw some really good teams compete. The Bookworms team is planning to go again in 2019, but we can have more than one team.

Book List
The list contains 20 titles: seven Iowa Children's Choice Award books, five Iowa Teen Award books, and eight other award winners and "classics."

You can get a copy of the list from Mrs. Speer or check out this link.
